THE WESTSIDE TRAIL EXTENSION IS NOT YET OPEN. In August 2018, the City of Atlanta and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. purchased 1.8 miles of former railroad corridor on the westside informally known as “the Kudzu Line.” This stretch will extend the existing Westside Trail and connect to the Westside BeltLine Connector, which was developed by the PATH Foundation and opened in March 2021.
Making Connections
The Westside Trail Extension will be a 1.3-mile multi-use trail between Washington Park to the south and PATH Foundation’s Westside BeltLine Connector trail north of Hollowell Parkway. It will provide access to the Bankhead MARTA station, Maddox Park, the future Westside Park, and the Proctor Creek Greenway.
The 14-foot wide trail will include landscaping, a fiber duct bank, retaining walls, vertical connections to adjoining streets, stainless steel handrails/guardrails, storm management, soil remediation, lighting, and security cameras.
It will connect the neighborhoods of Bankhead, English Avenue, Grove Park, Knight Park, and Howell Station.
Design & Construction Update
In September 2020, ABI announced the selection of Alta Planning + Design to design the segment between the current end of the Westside Trail at Washington Park (at Lena Street) and Marietta Boulevard. You can download the presentation from the public meeting on October 26, 2020, and view the recording of the meeting.
ABI is evaluating next steps regarding converting the corridor to an unpaved trail. The corridor is closed to the public until ABI announces that it is safe to use.
Below is the general, anticipated project timeline:
- Concept Phase: November 2020 completion
- Construction Documents: November 2021 completion
- Construction: TBD, pending funding
