Southside Trail – Segment 1 is the first of five segments of the Southside Trail to be completed in a phased construction approach. At 0.8-miles long, it runs from the southern terminus of the Westside Trail at University Avenue to the Annie E. Casey Foundation site at Pittsburgh Yards, just west of the I-75/85 overpass. The paved multi-use trail opened on September 9, 2021.
In addition to the 14-foot-wide concrete trail, construction included ADA access at Allene Avenue and Metropolitan Parkway with appropriate crosswalks and signalization; ADA access at Pittsburgh Yards and to Capital View Manor; a new pedestrian bridge over Metropolitan Parkway; environmental remediation of the corridor; lights; security cameras; stainless steel handrails; utility relocations; storm water drainage; retention walls; and full landscaping. The corridor connects three open and emerging job centers – Pittsburgh Yards, Murphy Crossing, and Lee + White.
Project Status
There are a number of follow-on projects in the works along this segment of the Southside Trail:
- Design and permitting work is complete for a connecting sidewalk at Manford Road and bidding is in progress.
- A drainage improvement project will be underway in the next few weeks along the Rangewater development to better manage storm water that is following onto the Rangewater jobsite.
- GDOT has also requested some punchlist work be completed around the Metropolitan bridge and that will involve short term lane closures over the next two months so that additional concrete can be poured on at the bridge abutments.
